Tour Details

Not every great day needs a monument. Sometimes the Atlantic is enough.

This tour follows the coast west from Lisbon — past the grand early 20th-century villas of Estoril, where wartime Europe's diplomats, exiled royalty, and intelligence officers once kept uneasy company — toward Cascais, the most elegant small town on the Portuguese coast.

Cascais was the summer residence of the Portuguese royal family for over a century, and it shows. The 19th-century seafront palaces, the marina, the Cidadela fortress, and the particular character of a fishing town that never lost its composure despite becoming fashionable make for a genuinely unhurried morning. Your driver is at liberty while you explore — boutiques, the seafront promenade, a café stop, or simply the pleasure of a town that rewards slow walking.

Lunch is at a curated restaurant in Cascais, pre-booked by MBV. The seafood here is exceptional — this is the right place to order it.

After lunch, the day turns toward Cabo da Roca — the westernmost point of continental Europe. A stark granite headland above a vertiginous Atlantic drop, with a lighthouse, a UNESCO-recognised landscape, and the verse by Luís de Camões engraved at the site: "Here where the land ends and the sea begins." No development, no crowds in the afternoon, no horizon interrupted. A 40-minute stop that earns its place in the day.

The return to Lisbon follows the EN247 coast road through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park — cliff edges, Atlantic light, and one of the finest short coastal drives in Europe.

No entry tickets required. Lunch at your own cost at the pre-booked restaurant.

Estoril & the Coastal Road

Private meet-and-greet at hotel or residence. Departure from central Lisbon along the Marginal coastal road — the most scenic urban coastal drive in Portugal, running directly alongside the Tagus estuary and then the open Atlantic.

A brief stop in Estoril — the Casino, the grand early 20th-century villas, and the context of the Estoril Coast as wartime Europe’s most glamorous neutral ground. James Fleming based the world of Bond here in part; the espionage history and pre-war aristocratic exile culture make for an engaging 20-minute narrative stop before Cascais.

The most elegant small town on the Portuguese coast — once the summer residence of the Portuguese royal family, still defined by its 19th-century seafront palaces, marina, and the particular atmosphere of a fishing town that never quite lost its composure despite becoming fashionable.

Key elements: the marina walk, the old town lanes, the Cidadela fortress, and the beach promenade. Relaxed, unhurried, and well-suited to independent browsing — boutiques, cafés, and a gelato on the seafront. Your driver is at liberty while you explore.

Curated lunch pre-booked by MBV. Cascais has a strong restaurant scene at the premium end — seafood is the correct order. Suggestions include O Marisco da Vila (premium seafood) or Casa da Guia, a clifftop restaurant complex above the Boca do Inferno gorge with terrace views directly over the Atlantic.

The westernmost point of continental Europe — a stark, wind-exposed headland of granite cliffs above a vertiginous Atlantic drop. The lighthouse, the UNESCO-recognised landscape, and the complete absence of development make this the most elemental stop of the day. The famous verse by Luís de Camões — “Here where the land ends and the sea begins” — is engraved at the site. A 30–45 minute stop; photography, the clifftop walk, and the perspective.

Return drive via the coastal road. The return follows the EN247 coast road back toward Lisbon — arguably the finest coastal road in mainland Portugal, passing through Azenhas do Mar and the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park clifftops before rejoining the Marginal at Estoril.
